miss out on the advantages of genetic modification (GM) because of a resistance to wider use, according to an industry expert.

GM crops are considered one of the most cost-effective ways of coping with food demands as the world's population continues to increase.

However, the European Union still regulates the import and export of GM products very carefully.

Speaking to the Scotsman, European Livestock and Meat Trading Union secretary general Jean-Luc Merlaux said he was concerned that Europe is falling behind by resisting the adoption of this new technology.

"GM is becoming standard all over the world and most of the maize and soya now being grown in countries like USA, Brazil, Argentina and China is produced from GM crops. We have to question what this means for Europe," he told the newspaper.

The UK's Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee recently voted in favour of banning EU-approved GM crops, because of concerns over the potential for pesticide resistance.
