The amount of waste material being diverted from landfill sites to waste management centres has increased again.
According to the latest figures from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the year to the end of September 2010 saw the recycling rate climb to 40.3 per cent – up 0.2 per cent on figures from the 12 months to the end of June 2010.
It also represents a 4.5 per cent increase on figures from the same period a year earlier.
The total weight of waste being sent to landfill sites by local authorities decreased by five per cent in the year October 2009 to September 2010 to 11.9 million tonnes.
As local councils look to expand their recycling programmes, authorities in Conwy in Edinburgh have decided to introduce weekly food waste collections for local residents.
The Edinburgh scheme is a trial initiative, but all residents in Conwy – including those in rural areas – will get the service.
