A garden waste recycling scheme that was on the brink of being scrapped is set to return this weekend.

Central government funding cuts left Boston Borough Council needing to find a spare £40,000 to keep the service going, the Boston Standard reports.

However, the local authority has now allocated £10,000 from savings fund to allow collections to continue until the end of the growing season in November.

George Bernard, head of environmental operations at the borough council, told the newspaper that the council was committed to its recycling drive.

"The council recognises what a valuable service this is to gardeners in the borough, although provision of a collection service is a challenge in these financially-restricted times," he said.

According to the latest figures from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the year to the end of September 2010 saw the recycling rate climb 0.2 per cent to 40.3 per cent of all waste material.
