Government recycling targets help to give councils focus and improve their performance, according to one waste contractor.
Richard Benyon MP recently suggested in the House of Commons that recycling targets should be scrapped, as councils should be able to decide for themselves how much waste recycling they want to do, LocalGov.co.uk reports.
However, local government contractor, Biffa Municipal, said that the UK has a national target of recycling 50 per cent of household waste by 2020, and local targets will help to ensure the country stays on track.
The firms' development director Pete Dickson told the news provider that removing targets at regional level would constitute a "slap in the face".
He added: "Councils are generally comfortable with individual recycling and composting targets.
"These give them something specific to aim at, something against which progress can be measured, and something to celebrate when targets are met."
Mayor of London Boris Johnson recently took a new approach to promoting recycling in the capital, highlighting to residents how much money is saved through reusing material.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the recycling industry includes:
Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
