Firms in the oil extraction from seed industry are set to experience a dearth of rapeseed crop in the next year, it is claimed.
A new report from Oil World predicts that in the year starting July 1st 2011, the European Union rapeseed output is set to fall by 5.2 per cent to 19.5 million metric tonnes, according to Bloomberg.
In addition, it predicts that stockpiles will drop by 16 per cent, reaching 1.08 million tonnes.
This means, the report goes on to suggest, that seed processors will see their activity reduced by 2.7 per cent, reaching a three-year low.
The group says that rapeseed production prospects are set to reach "alarming proportions".
"We have received new information about larger-than-expected damage from frost and dryness as well as about poor crop conditions," the report notes.
According to expert Richard Griffin, firms in the oil extraction from seed industry can play a key role in tackling UK carbon emissions.
