Biofuels manufacturers are calling for a more consistent approach from the government, in a bid to ensure the fledgling industry can move forward confidently.
One of those firms, Ensus, has recently had to temporarily close its Teeside plant, due to "depressed market conditions", North East Business reports.
Complex importing and exporting laws mean that biofuels producers are able to undercut those from the UK itself.
John Seymour of regional biofuels umbrella group North East Biofuels told the publication that something has to be done about closing the loophole that is holding back the UK biofuels industry.
"You can't just dump a product like this here and undercut EU producers. It became apparent several months ago that this was happening. I'm sure it will be stopped and then we can get back to normal production again," he said.
The Country Land and Business Association recently expressed "deep disappointment" over the government's cautious approach to use of biofuels in transportation.
