A Conservative MP is asking his colleague George Osborne to consider a reduction in beer duty to ease pressure on the brewing industry.
According to Andrew Griffiths, MP for Burton and Uttoxeter, raising beer duty is "an expensive way to make money", as it has a knock-on effect throughout the economy, the BBC reports.
Mr Griffiths is not alone, either, with more than 100 other MPs backing his Parliamentary motion.
Beer duty has risen by more than 50 per cent since 2004, but the British Beer and Pub Association told the news provider that the benefit to the Exchequer has been minimal as it has merely prompted a decline in brewing industry revenues.
Moorhouse's Brewery managing director David Grant said the recent increase in beer duty could be "ruinous" for brewers, putting local jobs in danger, and he accused the government of "turning its back" on firms in the sector.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the brewing industry includes:
Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
