A Welsh council is considering plans to reduce the size of its wheelie bins in order to promote recycling.

Newport City Council believes that giving householders a reduced capacity for storing waste will encourage people to be more careful about what they throw away, resulting in an increase in material reuse.

A trial scheme has already started with 76 local homes, which are operating with up to a third less capacity in their wheelie bins.

Andrew Osborne, recycling officer at Waste Awareness Wales, said it is up to the council to explore measures that might encourage better waste management.

He added: "But, since we throw away less and recycle more than ever before, many people simply don't need big bins.

"In addition, we know that smaller bins for residual or non-recyclable waste can encourage people to recycle more."

This follows news that a new waste management centre in Llwydcoed has been opened to service the recycling needs of the Cynon Valley.
