Recycling rates in Harrow have hit a landmark figure of 50 per cent, it has been revealed.

This has been achieved thanks to a £400,000 funding grant, which has allowed the council to extended the collection scheme to flats that were previously left out, the Harrow Times reports.

Councillor Phillip O'Dell, responsible for environment and community safety, said that recycling half of all domestic waste is a fantastic achievement.

He also told the publication that not only is the environment benefiting, the local taxpayers re reaping the financial rewards.

"Few people think about the cost of processing waste when they put out their rubbish, but even with our impressive recycling rate, disposing of our waste will still cost us £5.6m this year," he said.

Newport City Council recently revealed it is looking at the possibility of giving homeowners smaller general waste wheelie bins, in a bid to encourage more recycling.
