Processed animal protein (PAP) could soon be making a return to the food chain via animal feed.

PAP has been banned from feed as a precaution since mad cow disease rocked the farming community years ago.

However, according to the Independent, since then numerous studies have failed to find any negative side-effects of using the substance in feed.

MEPs are due to vote on whether PAP can be returned to feed this week, but the European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety has produced a document giving its backing to the u-turn.

"From the attitude of sustainability and animal welfare, there are some very strong arguments for introducing PAP into diets," consumer behaviour expert Philip Graves told the newspaper.

Experts are also predicting that genetically modified crops will soon be sanctioned for use in animal feed production. David Gibson of poultry processor Moy Park says that such a decision is probably a year away.
