Ealing Council has taken a novel approach to encouraging more people in the area to recycle, by offering financial rewards.

Four grants of £20,000 each were given to wards in the council area that were deemed to have performed best in their recycling efforts, the Ealing Gazette reports.

Elthorne and Hobbayne split the pot for best overall performance, with both reaching 72.7 per cent of residents using the green boxes, food waste bins and bags for plastic and garden waste.

South Acton took £20,000 for the most improved ward with recycling rates having risen by 6.1 percent to 54.5 per cent. The money can be used on local projects to spruce up the neighbourhood.

"This competition has shown it is possible to improve recycling rates and a special mention must go to South Acton, which improved by such a staggering amount," Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for Transport and Environment, told the newspaper.

Newport City Council is currently considering a plan to reduce the size of its general waste wheelie bins, in another novel attempt to increase recycling rates.
