Polymers manufacturers are still being hampered by a lack of material from the plastics recycling sector.

According to Waste Management World, many firms are concerned about shortages of usable plastics waste, meaning that potential growth in the sector is not being fulfilled.

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has also questioned the wisdom of exporting used plastics when the domestic rate is experiencing such high demand.

BPF Recycling Group Chairman, Roger Baynham, said that the industry is really bouncing back from recession and needs support.

"The plastic recycling industry must have access to more waste otherwise as a sector we risk losing credibility with our customers … they will say to us that for years you have been wanting us to use more recyclate and now that we've geared up to use it, you can't deliver," he told the website.

Some county councils, such as Wiltshire's, have announced that kerbside plastics recycling programmes have been scrapped for not being cost effective.
