Lambeth Council is pushing a new recycling programme that is targeting electrical equipment.

A series of waste collection bins have been placed throughout the district appealing for old phones, remote controls, kettles, hairdryers and other appliances to be deposited, London SE1 reports.

Lorna Campbell, cabinet member for environment and sustainability on Lambeth Council, said that it was an important step in reducing waste in the area.

She told the community website: "Sometimes people have old or broken electrical items lying around at home that they don't know what to do with.

"By recycling them at one of our new recycling banks you will be helping the environment."

This follows news that Ealing Council is offering cash incentives to residents in order to encourage more recycling.

Four grants of £20,000 each have been made to wards with the best or most improved recycling rate, which can be spent on projects to improve the neighbourhood.
