A number of environmental groups are taking the European Commission (EC) to court over what they claim is a failure to meet transparency laws regarding Europe's policy on biofuels.
Law organisation ClientEarth, Friends of the Earth Europe, FERN and Corporate Europe Observatory have filed a lawsuit after the EC refused to provide access to decisions made.
Currently, the Renewable Energy Directive sets a target of ten per cent on the use of renewable energy in the transport sector, compliance with which is monitored by voluntary certification schemes.
However, the groups claim that the EC has not been transparent in its considerations of which of these schemes it will accredit.
"These policies are too important to shield from scrutiny [and] decision making processes need to be more participatory," said James Thornton, chief executive officer of ClientEarth.
The law organisation also recently sued the European Chemicals Agency for withholding the names of toxic chemicals producers.
