The amount of waste going to landfill in Scotland fell from 6.1 million tonnes in 2008 to 4.7 million tonnes in 2009, latest figures from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) have shown.
Additionally, last year more than 37 per cent of municipal waste collected by local authorities was recycled or composted, slightly up from 2009's figures.
In September last year, the country's largest organic recycling facility was opened in Cumbernauld, which converts food waste into energy.
"The fact that more waste is being composted and recycled at the same time as less waste is being collected and less waste landfilled, shows that the concept of reduce, reuse, recycle is increasingly becoming part of Scotland's way of life," said Gary Walker, waste unit manager at SEPA's national waste team.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the waste processing industry includes:
Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
