Firms in the biofuels industry can expect strong sector growth throughout 2011, according to new research.

A report from Automotive World finds that demand for petroleum-based fuel will return to growth in the coming years, but need for biofuels is expected to see a much larger increase.

The biofuels sector is set to double its 2009 size by 2015, with ethanol production alone set to rise by 40 per cent during this period.

However, the report warns that this does not mean that the biofuels boom will continue year after year, as there are many potential barriers to growth.

The report states: "The enormous areas of land required to cultivate sufficient biofuels crops are simply not available and the clearing of rain forests or peat land to provide more agricultural land is counterproductive."

Research by the Guardian newspaper recently revealed that half of the land used in Africa for biofuels is owned by 11 British companies.
