Transport for London is trying to achieve a sharp increase in the amount of recycled material generated by the Tube network.

London Underground has increased the number of bins at its stations by 25 per cent, taking the total number on the network up to 800.

It is part of a campaign launched in partnership with Mayor of London Boris Johnson, the Metro newspaper and Keep Britain Tidy.

Any litter collected in the bins is sorted, with reusable material being sent to waste management recycling plants.

According to London Underground, 70 per cent of the material put in litter bins on the Tube Network can be recycled.

This follows news that the government is set to make waste management and a reduction in the use of landfill sites key components of its upcoming Waste Review.

"[Waste prevention] is going to be very important. We need to put a lot of strength and weight behind it," Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs director of waste Neil Thornton explained.
