UK Manufacturers involved in the food processing and animal feeders industries are being invited to Mexico for a global gathering.

The third annual Global Feed and Food Congress will be held in Cancun from April 21st to 23rd where attendees will be given the chance to explore the theme ‘The Food Chain: From Farm to Table’.

Sponsored jointly by the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO), the event will feature exhibitors from across the animal feed and food sectors.

More than 1,100 exhibitors from across the food industry are to come together for the UK’s leading meat, food and drink exhibition.

Foodex 2010 will open its doors at the Birmingham NEC Arena from March 21st to 24th and representatives from across the meat world are expected to attend.

The convention will consists of eight key events including exhibitions, presentations, competitions and the launch of new innovations in food and drink.

The UK’s first conference on biomass has been hailed a success, paving the way for increased activity in the market.

More than 600 delegates attended Energy from Biomass and Waste UK (EBWUK) at the Royal Horticultural Hall, where some 60 exhibitors had gathered to present information on bioenergy production, according to environmentalexpert.com.

Among the many topics under discussion, was the expansion of Britain’s waste management resources. It is largely hoped the UK will develop its capacity for producing sustainable energy from waste materials, limiting the amount sent to landfill.

A Cheshire-based animal feed and fuel distributor has bucked the recession, reporting £2 million profits.

NWF group said good grazing conditions and lower prices for crude oil helped it to see profits rise by 1.1 per cent in the six months to November 2009, according to Crain’s Manchester Business.

Revenue at the firm’s food distribution arm also remained stable. Operating profit in this sector had the most substantial gains, increasing by 70 per cent to a record £1.7m.

A plastic recycling plant in Redcar has become the first site to receive a WRAP grant to boost the UK’s mixed plastic recycling efforts.

Awarded to recycling firm Greenstar WES, the grant from the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) will help to create up to 20 new jobs at the site based at the Wilton International industrial park.

Once up and running in early 2011, the plant will process around 20,000 tonnes of mixed plastics, such as meat trays, yoghurt pots and margarine tubs, annually.

A new sieve tensioning system has ‘closed the technological gap’, according to a review on Solids and Bulk.

The materials handling specialists revered the TorqueMaster system, which is used in sieve shakers such as the Analysette 3, manufactured by Fritsch Analysette 3, because it allows for accurate sieving analysis.

Product reviewer Andrea Kohler admitted the Fritsch sieve shaker is not a common brand but said the TorqueMaster is the best tensioning system for all sieve stacks as it can be used with any sieve shaker.

Wirral’s manufacturing industry has received a boost thanks to the beginning of a speciality tea contract in Moreton.

Typhoo will be creating ten new jobs in an operation to provide famous Knightsbridge store Harrods with fine teas, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Belt conveyors will be used at the facility, which employs 277 people, after the contract was moved from the south.

More manufacturing firms slipped into administration in 2009 than in the previous year, although there are hopes that the industry is beginning to recover.

New figures from business advisory company Deloitte revealed a 12 per cent rise in manufacturing administrations in the past 12 months, with the industry accounting for 17 per cent of all UK administrations during 2009.

Despite being particularly hard-hit by the recession, the rate of new administrations began to ease towards the end of the year.

An increased demand from abroad for British-made goods has helped output in the manufacturing sector rise for the first time in two years.

This is according to new figures from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), which revealed that 31 per cent of manufacturers surveyed saw output increase in the three months to January.

Just one-fifth (20 per cent) said that it declined, with the resulting balance of +11 per cent the highest it has been since the beginning of 2007.

Manufacturing levels across Scotland have picked up again, new statistics have revealed.

According to the latest data released by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Scotland, output was up for the second consecutive quarter over the final three months of 2009.

Furthermore, the increase in production levels was seen to be at its fastest pace since July of 2006, with this in turn boosting confidence levels within the manufacturing sector and encouraging businesses to begin taking on workers again.
